The Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (OBMEP) has existed since 2005 and is held by the IMPA (National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) with support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications. In 2016, over 17,8 million students of 99.59% of the municipalities of the country participated in the OBMEP. Out of these, 501 won gold medal, 1500 silver and 4501 bronze. According to César Camacho, IMPA former general director, the OBMEP has an extremely positive impact for all students and contributes to the future increase in the number of qualified professionals in the fields of exact sciences and engineering in the country.
In 2014, Instituto TIM supported the production of video classes for OBMEP’s Portal da Matemática (Mathematics Portal – matematica.obmep.org.br), a website that brings together applications and video classes that cover the entire curriculum of mathematics from the 6th year of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school. The aim of Portal da Matemática – which brings together about 500 videos – is to contribute with material support for teachers, students and the general public.
In the following years, Instituto TIM continued its support to OBMEP with the creation of Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarships, a new category of scholarships offered to students awarded with medals at OBMEP who entered Higher Education. The scholarships are monthly, at the amount of R$ 1,200, and have a duration of 12 months, renewable annually up to a maximum of 48 months. The beneficiaries are students of public universities in courses in the fields of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics and Statistics.
In 2015 and 2016, around 100 students were selected as scholars. In 2017, 50 more students were selected to receive the Instituto TIM-OBMEP Scholarship.
